Giza: Pyramids and Sphinx

After experiencing Cairo to the fullest we have to explore the greatest attraction of Egypt - The pyramids and sphinx. Giza, a rocky plateau situated just six kilometers away from Cairo, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The three pyramids were named after the kings they were built for - Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. Of the three, the great pyramid of Khufu is the largest and majestic. It is the only surviving structure among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and it remained the tallest structure ever built for thousands of years until the completion of construction of the Lincoln Cathedral in 1311.

The great sphinx of Giza is another attraction here. It is a limestone statue of a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion. The face of the sphinx is thought to represent pharaoh Khafre. Take a camel ride around the pyramids in sphinx to marvel at the tales of kings of Nubia, once deemed as Gods by the people. To marvel at these ancient structures against the setting sun is an experience of a lifetime you would not want to miss. If you have time, visit the Solar Boat Museum where the solar barge of Khufu is reconstructed. The solar barge is among the goods that were buried in the Great Pyramid of Khufu supposed to be used in the afterlife. It is a symbol of the ancient beliefs in the time of pharoahs as well as a testament for the incredible craftsmanship of the people at that time.

Luxor: The Open-Air Museum

All travel enthusiasts know well about the rich history of the ancient civilizations that ruled Egypt for thousands of years. The cities of Egypt will uncover vast regions of ruins and artifacts that will make you relive the memories of these lost civilizations. If you travel further south along the Nile from the Giza plateau you will see another such city - Luxor. It is sometimes called the World’s Greatest Open-Air Museum. Aswan: Uncovering Nubia and the Nile

Aswan is another historical site in Egypt that is different from Giza and Egypt. Aswan city is on the banks of the Nile, adorned by the famous Nubian culture. Start exploring Aswan by a visit to the Philae Temple, dedicated to goddess Isis. It was relocated to the Agilkia island in the 1960s to save it from the rising waters caused by the construction of Aswan High Dam. Another temple to be visited around Aswan is the beautiful Abu Simbel temple, built by Ramses II.

Visit the Nubian villages in Aswan to further explore the Nubian culture. The houses in these villages are bathed in beautiful colors and designs. Wandering through these villages, among its people, enjoying their traditional music and food will give a novel experience even to a seasoned traveler. Take a ride on felucca, a traditional wooden sailboat, along the Nile as the views of these villages slowly pass with the gentle flow of the great Nile. You can still visit the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages, and showcase the influence of Egyptian, Greek and Roman influences. Also, visit the Qaitbay Citadel, a majestic defensive fortress built in the fifteenth century. A visit to Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern counterpart of the Great Library of Alexandria, will tell stories of the lost might of a city, once considered as the intellectual center of the Ancient World.
